After a shopping trip to consignment, resale, and thrift shops last week, I posted this on FB.
I had all I could do to resist clearing off the $1 rack at a local thrift yesterday. Blk velvet halter gown (Witch, Morticia, and since it was a size 20, maybe even a drag queen?) “Buckskin” flounced skirt (Annie Oakley? Queen of the Rodeo?), and so on. Are YOUR costume suggestions ready for YOUR shoppers?
The other shops I was in that day: a consignment shop raising funds for a church school, a privately-owned shop, and a Habitat for Humanity thrift… none were making any attempt to broaden their potential market via a costume rack, signage, social media or advertising promotion.
Makes me sad. Halloween is
the most important holiday in our business to widen our potential audience.
Read all the Halloween posts here on AuntieKate the Blog, read the article on Halloween in our Archives of Past Articles on TGtbT.com but most of all
See why I say that
Halloween has nothing to do with October 31,
and everything to do with January 1- December 31, in How to Have a Frightfully Good Halloween which is downloadable on TGtbT.com (and while you’re there, pick up Holidays in Resale too, if you think your Christmas season could be a lot better.)
You can get the Bookkeeper Boxers here, but How to Have a Frightfully Good Halloween is probably more useful and one-size-fits-all.
