Do you look for
questions to answer,
potential consignors to motivate,
future markets to develop for your consignment, resale or thrift shop?
One way is to be sure that you use Google alerts to sort through the streaming masses of electrons coursing through the Internet every day. For example, I know there’s a large and active local group of resale shops in Rochester NY and yet this question’s been up for 3 days so far without an answer:
If you don’t use Google alerts to help you build your business, you’re overlooking a FREE (the favorite price of all consignment, resale and thrift shopkeepers) way to increase your shop’s market share.

Thanks! I hadn’t heard of it either, but I just set it up!! 🙂
Thanks! What do you recommend as keywords to be alerted to?
I dunno… what do YOU want to track? Your town? Your method of operation? Brand names? Depends on what you want to “watch”… and don’t forget, Google alerts don’t take the place of human thought. You should definitely be following any discussions/ conversations at local blogs, local meet-ups, sites which feature things that will help you thrive. If you have taken my advice re blogging, you’ll want to alert for topics which you can blog about: Pantone colors, or child safety, or thrifty decorating tips. To teach yourself, and to start conversations with your potential audiences.
I hadn’t heard about it either!! Thanks Kate!! I just signed up!
