Recycling at its extreme at a consignment, resale, or thrift store.Last week, we asked readers about their merchandising strategy for the very tail end of their clearance sales: goods which hadn’t sold during a scheduled markdown, then didn’t sell at the seasonal clearance sale either. For

the cheapest of the cheap,

what’s their (more…)

What's the best sale for a consignment, resale, thrift shop?Let’s say you’re at the absolute lowest point in your price markdowns at the end of a season or marketing cycle. How do you move the final dregs?

Maybe you’re thinking of a Dollar Rack or a BOGO event, or you are contemplating a 99-cent sale. Or a bag sale or a rack/ table on your sidewalk or in the basement. Thing is, you basically just want (more…)

As I was going through the Manual this weekend to prepare it for its next printing (I think this is the 13th or 14th edition!) , I ran across some little tidbits that even I had forgotten about.Too Good to be Threw The Complete Manual for Resale & Consignment Shops

And I thought I’d remind the many folks who use the Manual as an invaluable business resource of a couple of ideas that could take their consignment, resale, and thrift shops

up to the next level.

For example, right now might be a real good time to

have a fake sale in your shop.

See page 175 for this idea.

How one shop’s net profits went from 17% to 22% with one oh-so-simple change.

That’s on page 182 in the Manual.

The Preferred Consignor Club increases your shop’s uniqueness and perceived value.

If you don’t already use this way to differentiate your shop from the crowd, refresh your memory on page 65.

Can’t lay your hands on your copy of the manual without getting up from the computer? Scan through the Table of Contents to refresh your memory of the (possibly forgotten in the day-to-day flurry that is resale!) hidden delights that could be put to good use right now!

Oh, and for those who don’t use the Manual to make their shops all they dream it can be…or for those still in the dreaming stage…or for those who have the nagging feeling that they could do better? You too can have Too Good to be Threw The Complete Operations Manual for Resale & Consignment Shops for your very own. Place your order today here.

Why you need store bucks.

* To reward a consignor for bringing items in at the beginning of the season.

* To add to a payout, if you’re a buy-outright, as incentive for that seller to shop.

* To thank a particularly helpful donor.

* As incentive for staffers.

This could be a million-dollar idea for consignment, resale, thrift shops

One of the simple things that could be worth a million to your shop.

* As appreciation to a volunteer who went above and beyond.

* To add to a restaurant tip for that nice waitperson, or to surprise that nice cashier at your regular grocery store.

* To tuck in a birthday, “thinking of you”, thank-you card.

* As a “nice-talking-with-you” gift to the person next to you in the post office line.

* As a “thanks for being so enthusiastic!” gift for a customer wannabe who comes by when you can’t open for her/him.

Store bucks can make you wealthy

* For anyone who does you or your business a favor.

What are store bucks? Basically, $X in currency redeemable in your business…good for anything anytime. It’s not very gracious, after all, to offer a $5 off on any purchase $25 or more is it? That’s a coupon, not a gift. Or to give a 25%-off coupon. (All that says to the recipient is buy something and I’ll take a little off.) Or to limit what store bucks are good for (that’s like, well, yes, come over for Sunday dinner but no pie for you little missy.) . Give with open hands and heart, or don’t give store bucks at all.
