Kudos to this shop for thinking about a way to convert those Facebook “Likes” into shoppers in their store.

Kudos to Tags Consignment, Oakdale CA

They created this graphic to announce a traffic-building simple promotion for their shop, then put it on the shop’s Facebook page. On a Monday morning, so fans could talk their work-mates to coming with them…  Here’s the text:

Schedule your Sale.. so easy!
Call your Friends … it is time for you to have a sale on [a] day that is right for you! All counts include you:
3-4 friends 30% off
5-8 friends 40% off
9 + friends 50% off
Call TAGS to tell us your day..Same day is ok! Woot!
Easy and Fun!!

Tags, owned by Tanya in Oakdale CA, is motivating their Facebook fans to gather up a car- (or a bus-)ful of their friends to mob-shop. Notice that this is not an after-hours shopping party, doesn’t involve prior planning, invitations, refreshments or added staff hours. Just Find as many friends as you can to bring and earn a nice, fat discount on whatever you buy!

Additional kudos to Tanya for planning this month-of-June promotional boost: She announced that it was upcoming, starting in mid May, and pinned it at the top of the shop’s Facebook page.

Great idea, isn’t it? Could you use this idea in your shop?

(Tip: To pin a post on FB, see here. You can also pin in a group; you can’t on a personal page. Enjoy!)

Update: To find Tags on line, search for them in Facebook. Their web site is on hiatus.

It rained, quite a lot, here in Sarasota yesterday. If you had to write a front-page headline about that fact, what would you choose?

Big rain here?

Of course not. That’s just plain boring and hardly worthy of attention, right?

So let’s use this situation to think about how to make a headline so intriguing, (more…)

Paris flooding! Recent news told of curators at the Louvre moving priceless treasures up above the flood waters of the Seine. Closer to home, a high-end resale shop was completely ruined last week when the building’s sprinkler system burst. What would you do if such a disaster struck your livelihood?

Surviving a disaster in your consignment shop

Can your resale or consignment business survive a disaster?

Does your business have a formal disaster recovery plan?

While some businesses are devastated by disaster, others continue with (more…)

What’s guerilla marketing? According to the dictionary it’s

innovative, unconventional, and low-cost marketing techniques aimed at obtaining maximum exposure for a product.

Sounds like it’s just up the alley for our consignment and resale shops, right? Like these twosigns, stapled to electric poles, for a small gift shop.

Have you seen this shop?

A play on lost pet flyers, right down to the yellow copy paper… and the tear-off strips with the shop’s address!

160511 love me sign 2

Rambling, stream-of-conscious passage here, discussing all the wares the shop had that could help improve the reader’s life… a similar message could work as well, for a blog post or reading matter in the local coffee shop!

Alas, the shop closed in 2012. But the ideas will never die! Read the author’s blog post.

Never encountered the Guerilla Marketing books? Although the originals were written pre-social media, they are still treasure chests of low-cost, quirky, high-word-of-mouth ideas. I highly recommend them to consignment, thrift and resale shops who want to keep their heads above the waters of the Sea of Sameness.

Have you ever craved unique point-of-purchase items in your consignment or resale shop?

Things that will make your shop a destination not only for the eco-savvy, but for the folks who like having something made by people, something that didn’t come from the Big Boxes or wasn’t “Made in China”?

Ever longed to be able to attend the gift shows to find something that will build traffic in your shop, give you word-of-mouth, and generate profits? But can’t find the time or money to get to these shows?

Etsy shop, Macy's Herald Square.Well of course you have. But finding a wholesale source for, let’s say, ombre boho necklaces or peacock feather earrings or dragonfly stained glass suncatchers isn’t easy.

But it could be. Have you explored Etsy’s wholesale marketplace? It’s a way for retailers (that’s you!) to connect with Etsy sellers who can offer their goods at a wholesale price. Here’s a taste (notice Etsy uses Pinterest for this; something I’ve been suggesting YOU do!) of what’s trending this spring and summer.

Why, you can even ask Etsy merchants if they will create custom items for your shop!

Interesting fact: Macy’s flagship store even has an Etsy department. Something for you to explore for your consignment or resale shop? I think so. Let us know, in the comments, if this is working for you.
