January 17 is the birthday of Benjamin Franklin, one of our Founding Fathers… and the gentleman who has his portrait on the US $100 bill.
Maybe you’d like to speed up the pace of selling in January… maybe you could do a
promotion. Of course, you’d have to explain that if they spend $100, you’ll give them $20 off. Or even, a real $20 bill. Or maybe a “$20 off anything” coupon good in February?

Benjamin Franklin, of course, is the person credited with some of our favorite thrifty quotes:
A penny saved is a penny earned.
Never leave that till tomorrow which you can do today.
I conceive that the great part of the miseries of mankind are brought upon them by false estimates they have made of the value of things.*
* That last quote is one to keep in mind when you encounter reluctant consignors or sellers. đŸ˜‰

Okay. Right after Christmas, there’s this flurry of gift returns, right? The sweater that’s the wrong color or size, the gadget she hasn’t the faintest intention of ever using, and so on. Of course not everything can be returned, and many folks feel guilty about doing so.
Then there’s the perfectly-good items that get stashed away in place of the new and highly-coveted gifts: the old stroller replaced by the jazzy new model, the lamp that has to make way for the one she really wanted…. and people feel guilty (and cluttered!) in those cases too.

Mark this site for a great idea that you can use to promote your neighboring consignment, resale and thrift stores and all the small businesses in your market area. Study it good…
As they say:
Shopping in Portland’s Little Boxes on Black Friday and Saturday (and throughout the holiday season) is an alternative to the hubbub of the big box stores. It’s a great way to find unique gifts for everyone on your list, enjoy the hospitality and warmth of Portland’s independently owned neighborhood shops, have fun with your family and friends, and–just maybe–win some pretty incredible prizes, just by taking a stroll in Portland’s best shopping districts.
(I’ve bolded and italicized their reasons to patronize local and independent retailers.)
Now isn’t that more enticing than some command to “Shop Small Business”? Examine first, the appeal to shoppers (’cause that’s what it’s all about, right?) Then mull over the framework behind the idea and how it will affect your shop and your fellow merchants. How could your area do something similar?

Over on Facebook, a consignment shop had a great idea to call attention to their shop…over and over again. It was an appeal to the shop’s fans to post and share by commenting. Take a look at the results.
Love It Again gave her fans some suggestions, which made scrolling through the “entries” fun. They were day-specific ideas of what to post… since that’s what her clientele was DOING that day! Clever: she was reinforcing that the shop is a real part of her fans’ lives. Shop Local at its best. I’m so proud of this HowToConsign.com Sponsor.
Ask them to describe, in 3-6 words, why they love your shop… and tell them they can repost every few hours by simply saying ditto to their first post! That way, everyone sees why everyone else loves your business, and how much they REALLY love you. Chances are, some folks may have been following your contest, but never stopped in… so your regulars are motivating these potential customers.

More on testimonials: How Do you Get Them to Say Nice Things About Your Shop? and don’t forget to print out all those wonderful compliments for the real-life message board in your entryway. And note Resolution #4 here, from 2010… you can fulfill that for the whole year in one short time span!
