I recently made the “acquaintance” of a great non-profit shopkeeper, Debbie Morrison, who runs three thrifts in Tennessee. She mentioned in passing a promotion her shop uses:

Mystery gift Thursday: Spend at least $10.00, get a free gift.

Her publicity for this free gift includes this lovely way to say “please no complaints over your free gift”:

“Free gifts are in a brown bag, no changes, if you can’t use it, please find someone who can.”

Since Serenity Thrift is a non-profit thrift operation, what to use for a mystery gift was a no-brainer. They’d received Avon products as a donation. Everyone can use a little Avon, right?

If your consignment or resale shop would like to use this idea, how about some purchased-for-resale accessories? What could YOU see your shop as using for this promotion? Comment below, and remember, you ARE allowed to put in a plug for your business!

I had a lovely lunch recently with two consignment-shop partners. (Crab cakes yum!) We were talking about how November, December, and January, resalers of all sorts don’t seem to get the customer lovin’ they deserve.

Here’s (approximately) how the convo went:

“They just forget us starting in November.”

“They’re out Christmas shopping and no matter (more…)

Holy Snowman! Here it is, almost Black Friday, and WHAT will you do to entice and delight your customers?

If you’ve put off planning (who could blame you?) and have little time or money to devote to Black Friday and/or “Small Business Saturday”, some quick solutions:

First, refreshments. Because food is always memorable, even after that Thanksgiving feast!

Decorate your shop.

Sticking to the giving-thanks theme might be more appropriate:

Make sure your swing shop is a tempting “gift table” by signing it thusly:

Lastly, some take-home treats for your visitors. Packaged with your business card or a December-only coupon, of course:

Maybe you can get your Thanksgiving Day guests to make these customer-appreciation gifts up for you:

or this? (Make extras for purchase… fun teacher gift from the first-graders, huh?)

Or simplest of all:

Here’s how to have a wonderful holiday selling season in your shop!

If you’ve been following me on Facebook the last couple of days, you know my town is in the midst of a giant charity-donation vent, the Giving Challenge. And the creativity is flowing from Main Street to the Gulf of Mexico… ideas that could be tweaked just a bit and become

terrific inventive promo events for YOUR shop.

For example: did you know that the dogs that are least likely to be adopted from shelters are black? One of our shelters here in Sarasota is having a Blackout Event to show folks how adoptable these canines are.

That got me thinking.

Many shelters have the ability to come to your place of business with potential fur buddies; check whether yours do. Pick a date and get started helping match up customers and canines!

Help shelters find homes for black dogs. A promo idea from TGtbT.comWhat could your promotion’s name and theme be? If your shop sells furniture and home furnishings, you could use the catchphrase Adoption is the new black and feature, oh maybe leather couches that don’t show dog hair on the cushions?

If you sell kidswear in your consignment shop, how about Dogs that don’t show handprints… only lots of love? You could have a make it/ take it event for kids involving cutting hands out of paper and gluing on hearts…

But I think the promotion that will elicit the most smiles… and maybe even a spot on the evening news… is They go so well with your outfit: Chic Black Companions. Do a photo shoot (find a photographer that will donate her/his services!) of models wearing black outfits from your place with black dogs, and offer a free chic dog collar or leash for every adopted dog.
