So many things in my life in consignment started out as a benefit to ME… and then I learned they were a BIGGER benefit to my customers.

Great rack hanger for consignment, resale, thrift shopsLike my “New Arrivals” rack. A simple double rack placed near our sales/intake counter, close to our dressing rooms, where we put tagged, but not yet fluffed and hanger-changed, new arrivals. It was really for OUR convenience… a place to stash almost ready to go incoming garments until our part-time, after-school stock girl arrived and changed the hangers, buttoned and tied and put into stock, whatever had come in since opening that day.

But we put a rack sign on it, something like

“New Arrivals: You Get FIRST CHOICE”

and lo and behold…. a goodly percentage of these sold to delighted customers without ever resting shoulders on a shop hanger. Our daily regulars headed for that rack first thing, and were actually disappointed if we’d managed to keep up that day and the rack was empty or nearly-so.

Another thing I created as a benefit to ME, when I started accumulating LINES of potential consignors waiting for attention in my shop, was the Drop-&-Run Kit. I was simply looking to ease the stress of knowing there were people impatiently waiting for my attention… without realizing that being able to simply pop in, and more importantly OUT… was vital to my best consignors. That’s why I call our Drop-&-Run Kits

“the best thing you can do for your consignment shop.”

I know you’ll agree!

Many resale shopkeepers enjoy industry discussion groups on Facebook. They love to have a place where their ideas, comments and opinions are not the stuff of general knowledge.  It’s a place to discuss ideas, develop strategies, and even to learn something new.

[V]ery few businesses are doing something special with their presence on Facebook – I am sure you find the same thing with the pages you follow. Everyone seems to be doing the same thing, or saying the same thing. Over and over.

And oh how true! Over and over again, a shop’s page will have “Great stuff coming in” posts or “New markdowns taken!” While such commercial appeals are welcome, they don’t often build loyalty to your consignment, thrift or resale shop… the kind of loyalty that will have people thinking of your shop first, before they wander over to the mall.

Well, here’s a strategy that WILL build loyalty, one that works better than monthly Girls’ Night Out events and is easier, cheaper, and more consistent. A group page created by your business will

make your shop stand out from the Sea of Sameness

that consumers grow weary of in consignment and resale shopping today.

Starting a group page for your shop’s clientele is a great strategy to improve your business. This author’s #2 point, to add value to being a “regular” in your shop, is of course near and dear to my heart, but

I suspect #3 will be the real reason

you opt to put some time and effort into a shop FB group!

Ideally, your consignment, resale or thrift shop is easy to see all at once: one big area. In reality, though, you  may have areas suited for selling but not as readily visible: a back room, side room, even a room down a hallway. How can you lure shoppers in there?

Somehow, this type of display just doesn’t really do it:

back room before

So let me show you (more…)
