What is branding? It’s “a consistent message aimed at consumers’ emotions” and: “There can be no branding without differentiation, which is the ability to persuade consumers that your [shop] differs from the rest,” according to Entrepreneur magazine.

If that sounds good to you, create a visual and verbal message that makes your shop stand out from local resale stores and even from online options. Design an ambiance that persuades shoppers that yours is the best place to shop.

Perhaps you remember the Earthy Elegant (more…)

Max Burns, Consignment Child, on his first day of school

Here’s Max, who basically grew up (at least so far LOL) in Revente, a Columbia SC consignment shop, on his first day of school. He’s adorable, yes, but tear your eyes from that smile and see what he’s holding:

A fill-in-the-blanks sign

designed to create via cell phone photo, both a family keepsake and a perfect social media plug for his school!

How could you use this idea (tip: it’s a blank form under the glass and glass markers to use to fill in the specifics)? I found the perfect outfit for ________? This ___’s gonna look great in my home? I scored the BEST deal on ______?

Or maybe you like the

poke-your-head-through photo boards

which have been around since cameras were first invented? Here’s Rose Shapiro being Rosie the Riveter.

Imagine your shop name in the speech bubble

Revision 8-28-17: Oh dear, I forgot to include the photo that inspired this post! Here’s Kirsty Roefs of House of Consignment in Unadilla NY with their Back-to-School photo board!

Believe it or not, there are some independent, talented resale shopkeepers who simply cannot bring themselves to brag on their businesses. (Drives me gaga, but it’s a fact of life.) I’ve tried to encourage these reticent entrepreneurs. Even given them reasons to put themselves forth. Yet still there’s some puritanical streak in them that’s

holding them back from spectacular success.

If you’re a Shrinking Violet, here’s a technique that’s (more…)

WIIFM.

What’s In It For Me?” is the question everyone has. We’ve written about this a lot. Here’s an overwiew of the concept.

And a great example of how to put your WIIFM (more…)

Kudos to Lina Beth in Ocala FL for saying a nice goodbye to her customers… and for

reinforcing the name of her shop

at the same time with this lovely sign above the shop door. THANK YOU FOR SHOPPING AT LINA BETH

Such a simple way to get your shop name out there while saying goodbye and thanking shoppers. She’s not taking a chance that her fans will have to say to their friends “oh you know, that nice shop down over there, it’s Linda’s or Beth Ann’s or some name like that?

Notice that the shop reinforces its name in the signage seen as customers leave the shop.

See more brilliant ideas from shops that have received a Kate’s Kudos.
