If you’re a womenswear resale or consignment shop, no doubt you’ve encountered Eileen Fisher clothing. Simple, timeless, well-made (I have a favorite tank top that’s at least 20 years old and still looking fresh and elegant!), it’s a hit with fashionable customers.

Consignment & resale promotional ideas are EVERYwhere!

If you’ve been following me on Facebook the last couple of days, you know my town is in the midst of a giant charity-donation vent, the Giving Challenge. And the creativity is flowing from Main Street to the Gulf of Mexico… ideas that could be tweaked just a bit and become
terrific inventive promo events for YOUR shop.
For example: did you know that the dogs that are least likely to be adopted from shelters are black? One of our shelters here in Sarasota is having a Blackout Event to show folks how adoptable these canines are.
That got me thinking.
Many shelters have the ability to come to your place of business with potential fur buddies; check whether yours do. Pick a date and get started helping match up customers and canines!
What could your promotion’s name and theme be? If your shop sells furniture and home furnishings, you could use the catchphrase Adoption is the new black and feature, oh maybe leather couches that don’t show dog hair on the cushions?
If you sell kidswear in your consignment shop, how about Dogs that don’t show handprints… only lots of love? You could have a make it/ take it event for kids involving cutting hands out of paper and gluing on hearts…
But I think the promotion that will elicit the most smiles… and maybe even a spot on the evening news… is They go so well with your outfit: Chic Black Companions. Do a photo shoot (find a photographer that will donate her/his services!) of models wearing black outfits from your place with black dogs, and offer a free chic dog collar or leash for every adopted dog.

Hang ’em high, hang ’em low, hang ’em sturdy!

One of the hardest items to display in your home goods/ furniture consignment or resale shop is bedspreads, heavy drapes, blankets. You want to hang them so people can see them… but they are way too heavy to use standard hangers, even if you double or triple a heavy-gauge drapery hanger.
Here’s an idea some volunteer came up with at a local thrift I visit. Yes, it’s bulky… but so are those bedspreads. I’m betting these PVC pipe hangers result in much-faster sell-thru for these home textiles… which is what we all want!
Here’s hoping there’s a handy-person in your life to make some of these for your shop!

I love getting mail, don’t you? Even e-mail… when it’s from my consignment, thrift, and resale peers!
You can learn so much from the notices, newsletters, and info your counterparts send out. You really should, if you don’t already, add your name to others’ e-mailing lists and pay attention to what they tell their clientele.
Here’s a terrific example of an ideathat came to me via e-mail:
PRESELL your bags online for your next Bag Sale!
A non-profit, Career Wardrobe in Philadelphia, is doing just that. Their loyal followers can pre-purchase a bag for their sale for $20 online.
What a great way to get your customers to commit to coming to your sale (and maybe, even, inspire those who can’t come into making what amounts to a $20 donation)!
The shop doesn’t have a different price for online or at the door but I, personally, would… even just a $5 savings buying online versus at the door would motivate a lot of shoppers…
… and mentioning that “presold bag holders” get in the express entry line the day of the sale would REALLY motivate, don’t you think?

Good consignment shop advice… from an indie singer/songwriter

I could really harmonize with this advise from a savvy singer and marketeer. She says
I’ve learned that online blogging is a great way to deliver your message to fans in a clear and concise manner. But with the ease of posting social network updates with a click of a button from our Smartphones, I think it’s easy for a lot of independent artists and businesses to get lazy and neglect two of the most important cornerstones of a company’s online promotional strategy: their official website and mailing list.
Her reasoning:
So keep posting regularly on your social networks, but be sure to step up your online presence with keeping your website and mailing list active. Your consistency with these two major tools will assuredly push your professional image and business brand up to new heights.
